"Lord of the Flies" chapter 8


Here are the questions for Chapter 8:  Gift for the Darkness

1. Why does Jack decide to go off by himself?

2. What is significant about the sow that the boys kill? Do you think it was a good choice for them to kill this particular pig?

3. What do the boys do with the pig’s head? Why?


4. What is the Lord of the Flies? Why is it aptly named?


5. Why do you think Jack invites everyone to join him tonight at the feast?


6. Explain why most of the boys seem so willing to become a member of Jack’s tribe.


7. Give your own explanation of what really happens between Simon and “the Beast.”

1. At the beginning of Chapter 8, the boys are frightened of “the beast”. What could the beast represent symbolically?

2. Describe Jack in this chapter. How does he react to Ralph’s control of power on the island? How do Jack’s actions potentially impact the rest of the story?

3. Describe Simon’s confrontation with the “Lord of the Flies”. What is the “Lord of the Flies”? What could this symbolize?
